Natural Source Vitamins
Several studies show that the healthiest people take vitamins. Whether they are healthy because they take them or they take them because they’re health conscious is unclear. If you’re going to take them, the best ones are natural source vitamins. These are more bioavailable compared to synthetic ones. This means our bodies can access and use a higher percentage of the nutrients. You’re basically ingesting high quality food grown in safe environments.
Do We Need To Take Vitamins?
Many people think that if they eat healthy natural foods then it’s not necessary to supplement. Sadly, I think this is no longer true. Sixty years ago if you ate lots of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, dairy and lean meats you probably didn’t need to take vitamins. Our food contained the nutrients our bodies required for optimal health. This is no longer true. The nutritional value of our produce has declined due to poor growing and shipping practices.

Think about the following:- Much of our soil is full of toxins and chemical fertilizers.
- Our water is also full of toxins.
- Heavy demand for a large variety of fruits and vegetables all year round means picking them green for shipping purposes. Nutrients called phytochemicals (such as lycopene in tomatoes) are what protect our bodies from disease. These nutrients form in the fruit in the final days of vine ripening. When we pick green, although the fiber is still there, health-enhancing nutrients are missing. Also, have you ever noticed the taste of shelf ripened produce? Definitely not the same.
- Long term storage and shipping means more nutrients are lost.
- Thousands of foods are altered through genetic modification. This means that the original DNA is changed by the insertion of foreign genes from plant, animal, viral or bacterial sources for various reasons such as making them more insect repellent. (in the case of corn and soy) At this point the long-term effects of genetic modification are unclear.
Food guide recommendations used to say we should eat between 5 – 7 servings of fruits and vegetables daily. Due to all of the above, it’s been changed to as many as 13 servings a day would be necessary to get the required nutrients. This is crazy! It would be very difficult to eat that much along with all the other required foods. These are just a few reasons I think we need to supplement our diets.
How Do We Choose?
Stores are full of hundreds of synthetic vitamin and mineral supplements. How can one possibly choose? Many people choose the ones containing the highest doses of various vitamins and minerals. This can be dangerous because many processed foods are fortified with many of the same nutrients and more is not necessarily better. High doses can react with certain medications. Overloading your body with synthetic nutrients and unknown ingredients could be harmful to your health. At this point there is no regulation such as the FDA in place to make sure supplements are safe. You as a buyer need to do your research and look at common sense. It is wiser to look at the source and the combination of nutrients.
What Are Natural Source Vitamins?
One of the very best supplements on the market contains:- 12 plant-sourced minerals. The plants are grown hydroponically (in water) which contains high doses of certain dissolved minerals which are absorbed by the plant as it grows.
- a natural vitamin complex derived from a whole food-form matrix.
- standardized phytochemicals which means each caplet contains identical amounts of health-enhancing nutrients.
